"Chemical Engineering Stepping into the Future through the Synthesis,
Processing and Product Application of Electroactive, Photoactive and Bioactive Polymeric
Materials and Systems"

Dr Raymond Oliver FREng, FIChemE, CEng
Director, Arrow Science Consulting

One of the biggest technological challenges of today is how to harness discoveries in materials (electro, photo & bio active) and transform them into implementable value adding materials technologies in the 21st century.
This talk will concentrate on processing molecular functional materials by design, through the analogous processes employed by the semiconductor industry for superfunctional microelectronics and updating them through leading edge polymer material science and chemical nano technology.  This approach yields potentially low cost routes to high value materials which contain intelligence and is the beginning of the so called P3i revolution which will bring printable, paintable and processable materials with intelligence to a whole range of technological and consumer needs driven applications including:-

  1. Applied Medical Futures (sensors, activators and delivery systems for assistive healthcare and regenerative medicine)
  2. Conjugated, conductive polymer systems and devices (portable energy, printable light and flexible, lightweight displays)
  3. Interactive Consumer Products (ambient intelligence and smart materials and systems for use in automotive, aerospace, fashion, retail, safety, security and ‘soft machines’ for embedded ICT in built environment.

In particular, methodologies enabling the convergence of printing / deposition & chemical micro / nano technologies with electronics & biology will be highlighted and conclusions drawn regarding future needs driven markets and the emphasis placed on the role of conformable functionality in tomorrow’s products.
Responsive and programmable materials and the innovative use of multilayer, thin film deposition technologies will be described and the emphasis associated with reel to reel printing methodologies highlighted.
