Founded in 1873, École Polytechnique de Montréal is one of Canada's leading engineering institutions in the areas of teaching and research. Its student population and the scope of its research activities make it the largest engineering school in Québec. École Polytechnique provides instruction in 11 engineering specialties and is responsible for more than one-quarter of university engineering research in Québec. The school has 230 professors and nearly 6,000 students. Its operating budget is $85 million, in addition to a $68 million research and infrastructure fund, which includes grants and contracts worth $38 million. École Polytechnique is affiliated with the Université de Montréal.

McGill University is one of Canada's best-known institutions of higher learning and one of the leading research-intensive universities. With students enrolling from approximately 140 countries, McGill's student body is the most internationally diverse of any medical-doctoral university in Canada.

The oldest university in Montréal, McGill was founded in 1821 from a generous bequest by James McGill, a prominent Scottish merchant. Since that time, McGill has grown from a small college to a bustling university with two campuses, 11 faculties, some 300 programs of study, and more than 32,000 students. The University partners with four affiliated teaching hospitals to graduate over 1,000 health care professionals each year.
