Financing Industrial Research & Development

The WCCE8 Symposium on the Financing Industrial Research & Development in Montreal 2009 offers a unique opportunity for corporations to network, to share best practices and insights between Industry, University and Governmental agencies to discuss the latest programs and focus for future endeavours on the horizon.

Research and Development is an investment and like all investments it must become profitable. Recognizing and ending poor investments is key to maintaining and optimizing R&D resources. Equally important is to select and to apply financial, technical and strategic criteria to evaluate the R&D portfolio on an on going basis.

How does a company decide on the direction of R&D and then what projects within that direction? What are the financial criteria for a project to be attractive? The financial criteria for analysing the portfolio must include metrics, risk and uncertainty evaluation, and next best alternatives. Every corporation has its own methodology to evaluate and weigh these metrics. Dynamic industries typically value technical innovation more highly and are willing to accept a higher degree of risk.

This symposium will bring together industry, government and academia to share their methodology and experience to identify best practices for the chemical industry.
